The course will concentrate on understanding current and historical economic problems and policy development processes influencing New Zealand as well as overseas agriculture and trade. We will unpack how the decisions and success of agribusiness firms are affected by these domestic and international policies. The focus will be placed on applying economic tools and policy studies frameworks to the logical, critical and objective analysis of agricultural policies and evaluate how the welfare of the overall society is affected by government. Topics include, but are not limited to forces underlying policy formation, geopolitical centers of influence, international trade, nutrition, competition, Māori agribusiness and sustainability.
